Christened on July 10th 1809 at St. Dunstans Church, Stepney, London. The church christening details note:

"George Briar a native of St Domingo who has been preserved from the massacres in which his parents perished 7-1/2 years ago, by a black woman and brought to England by the charity of Capt Laughton was baptised and received into the church."

(see attached image of christening copied from London Metropolitan Achives records)

Interestingly, the only other christening entry on the same day is as follows "Jane Elizabeth daughter of Captain William Laughton, Ships Captain, the 31st May"

Recorded as obtaining his master's certificate at Leith in 1848 (up until now a ship's master didn't need formal certification), certificate number C 1,145, 2nd class. There is a further reference to this certificate as issued in London 24th May 1851. Could this have been 1st class certificate (as an upgrade)? His address at the time was recorded as 8 Hawthorndean Close, Commercial Road, but this appears to have been a boarding house and he may have simply travelled to London for his examination because he (or any family) is not on the 1851 census (30th March) at this address,

Served as ship's master on ships "Georgiana" and "Cockburn" in the late 1830s and the 1840s between Leith or London and the WI.

Lloyds Register of Shipping (1851/1852/1853 - 3 vols) has him as master of "Maria Hardy" 182 tons, operating between London and the WI. This was a "snow" which is an early type of brig (2 masted square rigger). It also records the owner as "Briar & co".

By 1853 he has moved on to the "Planter", a 280 ton barque (3 master square rigger) which operated between Dundee and the WI. The owner is recorded as A Gillespie.

The full list of voyages made by George Briar is listed in a separate spreadsheet file.

His address in 1861 when married is the "Queeen of Sheba" (in port at Barbados at this point, it is assumed).

In 1871 Census recorded address was 3 Manse Villas, Rectory Road, Hackney, London. Occupation was "Ship Master", Born Santo Domingo / British Subject.

In 1881 Census, recorded address was still 3 Manse Villas, Rectory Road, St John Hackney, London. Occupation was "overlooker of ships", born Santo Domingo, West Indies.

He died on 5th Nov 1881 in Stoke Newington, Middlesex leaving an estate of £733 to his wife Emma (a comfortable sum of money for those days!)
