Shared note | He married Annie Herrapath (nee Smith), a widow, and so took on her two young sons Paul and Jack as well (both born in the 1890's) In 1901 Census recorded address was 42 Howgate Road, Kingston, Surrey. Parish was Mortlake and Parish Church was St Marys. Also recorded was Paul Herapath (stepson) aged 7 - Born Putney. Although a widower (since 1914) with two children (Maurice and Winnie) plus two step sons (Paul and Jack) he decided to join the army during 1914-18 war. This might have been prompted by the knowledge that his two younger brothers were enlisting as well. He enlisted 14th Aug 1915 and was discharged on 30th Aug 1917. He was discharged under Army Order 265 of 1917 para 2D which states "Those who have served as soldiers and being now OVER MILITARY AGE have been discharged other than for misconduct". Now, on his discharge record it shows his age as 41 years whereas his real age was 51 years - so he must have lied to get in the army in 1915 since he was already over the "military age". He was in 63 Training Reserve Battalion with the rank of private and was discharged from his unit at Shrewsbury. His type of discharge meant that he would have been awarded the "Silver War Badge". Interred in family plot 32634, Highgate Cemetery (16/2/1934) along with wife Annie (2/2/1914) and son Archie (25/12/1897) |
